Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands

Synopsis: To tell this story, director Pedro Vasconcelos cast Fernanda Paes Leme as Floripedes, Marcelo Faria as Vadinho and Duda Ribeiro as Dr. Theodoro and other 13 actors. The story takes place in Jorge Amado’s Bahia, set in the 1940’s, with music, dance, food and celebration.

While Vadinho is immoral and irreverent, Dr. Theodoro Madureira is methodical and controlled. Even with such antagonistic features, the two enchant Flor, the cooking teacher, who lives each relationship to the fullest.

The play begins with Vadinho’s death. During his wake, his friends recall the binging, the games and lovers of the deceased. Through flashback, the public has the opportunity to experience the first meeting between Flor and Vadinho. From then on, the two begin dating with the blessing of Dona Rosilda, Flor’s mother, who believes her daughter is being united to the nephew of a prominent politician. When Dona Rosilda discovers the true identity of her son-in-law, Flor leaves home with Vadinho and is surprised by his real personality, a husband who likes to enjoy life to the fullest and spends his money on gambling and women.

During her widowhood, Flor misses her husband. Although she is not open to a new love, Flor encounters the charms of Theodoro Madureira, a respected bachelor who proposes marriage. Theodore is completely different.

After their first anniversary and the same daily routine, Flor sees Vadinho in her bed, who returns invisible to everyone except to his beloved. From then on, Flor feels divided between him and her current husband. In the end, we are surprised by Flor walking happily beside Theodore and Vadinho down the streets of Salvador.
